I added a quart of heavy weight and it stopped losing oil.

Yep past the rings and straight into the cat. Make sure when they take it off that you get to look inside it. I imagine it is clogged with oil

the honeycomb in his cats have cracked and are rattling internally. Usually a lean engine condition will cause this. You guys try 10W30 dino oil for a couple of changes, you will have little to no consumption and a quieter engine.

I do think he is probably telling you the truth about mopar spec. I am a tech for a Honda dealer and Honda's spec is a quart every 1,000 miles. In my opinion there is an issue if your burning that much oil but that is what the manufacturer says is ok. I think it is to cut down on warranty repairs. They will not cover a repair under power train warranty unless it uses more than that. Hope this is helpful!

I have a 2007 and maybe put 1/2 quart in at about 2,500 mi. I change it every 3,000 miles an use factory recommended valvoline.

Exactly. It is due to sloppy tolerances when building, so they say that to leave a huge margin of error. Its ridiculous

Default Are there any trade offs or issues

with going with a thicker oil?
I have no clue when it comes to this but adding oil every week or so is becoming quite a PITA. specially now that it is getting colder.

My co-worker had this issue with his 2009 JKU and the dealership ran a dye in his oil so that they could see if it was leaking in the engine anywhere under black light and sure enough it was. They fixed it under warranty.
