Is overfill bad for my autotransmission ?
Maintaining the proper level of fluid is essential for proper working order and longevity of the automatic transmission. Severe overfilling can cause the fluid to become aerated which could cause slippage and overheating. In addition the excess fluid could be pushed up and out the filling tube (vent), and onto the engine. I would not think a few ounces would constitute a severe overfill, however a litre may. You might want to drain some of it.
Make sure you are checking the fluid level correctly. If it is indeed overfilled, find someone with a Pella Oil Extractor and draw some oil through the fill tube. That will avoid having to remove the pan.
With a litre overfill you Will blow fluid once your tranny is at hot operating temperature. When it blows out it will coat your hot exhaust and you could have a fire. Several wranglers have had total loss fires that are coming to be blamed on this fluid blowing out. Get a suckup pump where you can pull out what you need thru the dipstick tube. I personally would do this today....
If indeed you did overfill it, I too would say drain some out. But before you go through all the trouble, just make sure you check the level correctly, ie: on flat ground and warmed up to operating temp.
Auto transmissions are rather delicate when it comes to fluid. Like everybody else says, don't over fill. If you really have, remove the excess. It is especially true in these Wrangler trannys, as we have seen a number of fires which we may relate to ATF (as already stated by TinMan).
