Default Poor Side Impact Rating

The 2 door model without side curtains has received a low safety rating. May want to call an off-road shop and order up some rocker guards. I have Shrockworks. Between that and my full line of Hard Rock skids, I doubt this will be an issue for me.

Hadn't heard that. I thought it was good in previous years. Sounds like some good advice about the rocker guards. Maybe good rock rails could help at least to absorb some of the impact below the door sill.

BTW someone should move this to JK Talk or Stock Tech since it's absolutely Jeep related for those of you who have 2-doors.

Hmmm...wonder how much better it would have done if they tested one with the side airbags? From the quote below it sounds like the side bags really helped the score of the Patriot. From what I've read the side bags in the Wrangler also offer upper protection almost like a side curtain airbag does. However, it seems like they were very concerned about how the Wrangler's door opened during the crash which could "lead to a person being ejected from the vehicle". That made me laugh since many folks here drive doorless to begin with

The 2008 Jeep Wrangler, meanwhile, which was tested without optional side air bags, received the Institute's lowest score of poor in the side test. Previous versions of the two-door vehicle had received the second-lowest score of marginal in side crashes.

Lund said that during the latest test, the Wrangler's driver door opened during the crash. The opening could lead to a person being ejected from the vehicle, he said.

Chrysler LLC spokesman Max Gates said the Wrangler "meets or exceeds" all federal safety standards and "no single crash test provides a full picture of a vehicle's crashworthiness."

Tests of the 2008 Jeep Patriot showed the benefits of side air bags. A version of the Patriot equipped with an optional front torso air bag received the top score of good in the side test. A Patriot without the side air bags received the second-lowest score in a separate side test.

I like how they don't test one with airbags, just note that they are optional.

To be fair, it needed to be tested with and without airbags.

I wonder if the four door has the same issue? If the drivers door opened on the 2 door, I imagine it would open on the 4 door.

If you think about it it kind of makes sense that the JK would still get a lower rating. Why it's worse than TJ's I have no idea.

The sticker on the window even says that it doesn't protect against side impact of anything bigger than "the elements".

I saw the film on TV with a Red Wrangler. The damage did not look that bad to the Wrangler which means the energy is transmitted direclty to the occupant. So more side stiffness will not help this condition by adding rocker guards.

Instead we need soft foam like NASCAR COT to absorb the impact but then would we need a wing in back too.
