Agreed, better to have and not need it then to need it and not have it. But as stated here, check the laws of the states you are traveling through. I live in PA and have a conceal carry but live right next to the borders of new york and new jersey which are not nearly as firearm friendly.

I'll echo the thought if you've never carried or are familiar with the law maybe you should pass, if you have the time before your trip get your license and check out the laws.

My daily carry is a Ruger SP101 .357 mag.
Don't worry about the animals, they are more afraid of you then you are of them... Just make lots of noise and carry whistles, bear bangers, as bear spray. I'm in the bush everyday and have had no issues at all with wild animals. Also educate yourself on bear awareness also don't forget in western north america we have cougars and if you see one, then nothing is going to help you
