Default Question about Tread Depth

At the page http://www.bfgoodrichtires.ca/specs/...-km2/3930.html

Look at the "Tread Depth" section, I don't understand the "in/32nds" unit. What does it mean?
Example; the LT285/70R17/D has a tread depth of 19

its 19/32nds of an inch. 16/32nds would be a 1/2".......19/32nds is a little over a half inch.
