Questions on a M101-A3.
Hey all, first thread I've started, just looking for some assistance from the knowledgable forum users. I found a guy local to me that is selling or trading an M101-A3 for 900$. I'd like to have one for camping etc. but don't know much about them. Was hoping some of y'all could help with problems to look for or any general knowledge I should know before trading for it.
All help is appreciated!!!

I just listed an M416 for sale. It's the smaller trailer but can hold a lot. Is great for camping.

That is clean.
Thanks for the help and replies, I wasn't really looking to buy one, but just ran across this one that the owner was wanting to trade for a firearm and I happened to have one to trade, so figured I'd see if it would be even worthy of me trading. I appreciate it
M101s are actually pretty light, at
Least when compared to an M105. 101s are generally about 1400 pounds, which is a good trade off between size and weight. Just make sure it's not a 105 because they're about 3000 pounds!

The Jeep club I'm with does mostly expedition type trips and many of our guys have M416's which are fantastic on the trails. We only have 1 with a M101 and he uses it behind his FSJ, not his Wrangler or GC. It's definitely bigger and not too bad behind the JK, but not that great if you plan to take it on tight trails.
However if you have the ability to trade for one, don't hesitate, go for it. If you find it's too big later, you should be able to trade that for a M416 without any difficulty.

Are you sure it's an A3? The A3 has HMMWV wheels and 37" tires, a wider axle, and wider fender flares to cover the wider back spacing on the hummer wheels and wider axle. That looks like an A2 with narrow flares and the 37" tires retrofitted. I towed an M101A2 with my JK on 35s and stock 4.10 gears. It was a bear to tow, loaded to about 1500lbs. It did good on flat ground but hills killed it. With proper gearing or stock sized tires, I'm sure it'd do great. I was able to go 70mph just fine on flat ground. It tracked great, and the surge brakes really worked great to get the trailer slowed down and stopped, w/o over loading the JK's brakes.
I payed $700 for my M101A2, in excellent shape, with an immaculate tan top, and full metal side rails, but with the plain steel 16.5" wheels and 31" trailer tires that come on the A2. Even if it is an A2 with A3 wheels/tires, $900 isn't a bad price if it's in great shape.

Here is one I picked up last weekend in McKinney, TX. Wife, I, and two kids took the JK camping in NM and CO this summer. After a week living out of the back of the JK and I knew we needed a trailer. This trailer can go anywhere the JK can and the JK can pull it.
This was one of four he had for sale, and they had be refurbished by our Uncle Sam right before they parked them. New hoses, tread, paint jobs, side rails. No bows or canvas but he was asking significatly less and still has a couple left I think.
There isn't much to them, so look for the usual suspects like rust, bed condition, tire wear, hoses, brake lines, lighting harness, tail lights & connectors, etc. Does it have bows and a canvas/vinyl top (if you want them they can be hard to find and sometimes $$)? I think you should go hook up to it and take it for a test spin if you think you're interested.
Mine pulled like a dream doing 70 - 80 mph on our wonderfully maintained OK highways! Only lost 3.5 mpg doing it too. Surge breaks worked great, didn't bounce around, tracked awsome, and didn't weigh too much for the JK. Mine is a M101a3 with HMMWV 8 lug run flats, and 36" Goodyear RT bias ply tires.
