quick question
my girlfriends car has finally died...after 14 years i believe? anyway, she has about 10 grand to spend on one. what would be something, reliable...and good mpg for around that much...trying to to end up with a friggin civic, or accord..
so any input would be great.

My cousin inherited a used Saturn to her dismay
back in the mid nineties. She keep it and got to accept it.
She got a sales job so she decided to get a nicer one, but still used because they fuel efficient but much cheaper than other small cars.
I believe she has owned 4 of them now, all used and I guess she decided to spread the pain because she is going to buy her daughter a used one next spring.
They may not be the greatest, but given their low resale value they are reliable and a good value.
Neither she nor her husband are mechanically inclined so I know there is not a lot fixin' goin' on there.

Even though you are trying to stay away from the Hondas, I would recommend taking a look at them if you are in the used market. They are eliable, afforable, and comfortable. Just stay away from those that look to be modified. There is a right way and a wrong way to go about it with them, and most of the kids that "tune" them have no clue what they are doing.
In the used car market, I would stick with imports. Honda, Subaru, Nissan, Toyota, and Mazda hold their resale value pretty well, and for good reason. Mitsubishi, while a good car manufacturer doesn't seem to hold the resale value as well as the others. I personally would lean towards Honda, Subaru, or Mazda.
As far as new cars go, well, someone mentioned Hyundai and Kia. I'm not a big fan, but they are relatively inexpensive, apparently reliable, and, have a pretty good warranty. I wouldn't want to drive one though.
