Default replacing pistons without pulling motor

I was wondering if I can pull the heads off and pull pistons out to replace the rod without pulling the motor out. I have an 08 wrangler that had a knocking noise. I pulled the oil pan and looked up underneath and it looks like the crankshaft is hitting the drivers side rear piston. Is this something I can repair myself or should I take it to a garage? Any help would be appreciated.

The only way I know how to remove the pistons is by hit it with a stick or something from underneath the piston. If you have room under the jeep to do that you might be able to do it without removing the motor.

I would take it to a garage. There will be other residual problems associated with a disconnected rod.

You should take it to a garage, then engine needs to be out of the jeep and inspected for other issues.

I think I might try and do it myself. If I get to a spot that I know I won't be able to do it anymore, it has to be towed to a garage anyways. Its worth a shot if I can save a little cash

I would just plan on pulling the motor. As stated by other posters you will probaly have other issues to address.
