Question Rolling backwards.

If you have an automatic tranny and you can't make it up a hill; will it hurt the tranny if you let it roll back while it's still in gear?

Good Q, I would like to know as well. But if you can't make it up and know you're going to roll back why not pop it into N?

Stop and put it in reverse, stay off the breaks.

Depending on the conditions of the hill you couldn't climb(muddy/slippery) the only effective way to slow down your decent is to feather the throttle with the jeep in a forward gear. What effect this has on the tranny I don't know. I would rather have some control on the way down than pop it into neutral or reverse and rely on the brakes.

Question

Something is wrong here. Somehow my text that I type is being eaten
Anyways, what I originally wanted to ask was; say if I can’t make it up a hill. Will it hurt the auto tranny if I let it roll back down in gear?

I'm pretty sure all those replies were to that question.

I have found that you end up getting conflicting answers to any question you ask on the internet. If you get an answer at all.
