It depends on your driving style really. Highway vs. city. More city driving usually means rotors replaced more often. Odd you had to do rear brakes before front brakes. Majority of braking comes from the front end. But anyway, signs of failing rotors are a low grinding noise when braking or a wobble in the steering wheel/seat when breaking.

Left: Rotor damaged by exposed screws in worn out brake pads
Center: Heat damaged rotors resulting in warping and cracking
Right: New brake rotor

Due to the abs/ESP systems the rears do wear quicker than the fronts. Look at getting your rotors turned to get more life out of them. My front pass. Needs replacing real bad due to a rock that got stuck better the shield and rotor. I have gouges that are easily between 1/8 and 1/4" deep!

I replaced my rears (pads and rotors at about 30K miles. The original rotors looked fine on the braking surface but they were, for lack of a better word, delaminating. On the plus side, the replacements were cheap. I'm still running the original OEM front pads and rotors........they hardly look worn at all.

I just replaces mine. The rotors looked fine but what the heck, new rotors were only $35. For just over $100 I got ceramic pads and new rotors. No more squeeks!
