Rubicon or Not?
You can determine the model of any Wrangler. All you need are the last 8 digits of the VIN number. The VIN number is located on the driver's side dash, near the base of the windshield frame.
Go to this site: http://www.jeep.com/en/owners/
On the upper left side of the page is a box that says, "About My Vehicle". Select Wrangler and the model year.
Enter the last 8 digits of the VIN and click Go.
A new page will load that will tell you what version of the Wrangler it was when first built.
For mine it said: Vehicle Description: JEEP WRANGLER X 4X4 SPORT UTILITY 2-DOOR
Model Year: 2008
I suggest that you run this on any used JK you are seriously looking at. It will also tell you if there are any outstanding recalls or any unresolved customer service issues (open files).
If you do the above, you can easily avoid getting conned.
My regards,
Widewing

If you go the jeep.com and put in the vin, it'll bring up recalls. It will also say what model it is...
I am in the market for a another JK, why spend $29,000 on a new rubicon, when you can find deals for around $20,000 with very low miles and no offroad use. That cheaper than a new X too!
I found one cheap with everything i wanted, minus a hartop for around $20,000. Very low miles too.

that vin decoder website is here: http://jeep.avtograd.ru/VIN/vin_en.asp
it's like russian or something, but it works.

There are actually a lot of them, if you google "vin decoder" there are tons available.

I would personally check this info before i bought anything (and have in the past)
I think the OP did the right thing by being an informed consumer, I am very glad you didnt get taken, but more than likely someone else will

Don't they even look at the brochure to see what they are selling?
