To Rubicon or not to rubicon
After milling over jeep.com for days I think what I'd like is a sport S but then I see my brother inlaw and he's telling me I must get a rubi or I can't "really" go off road. So is the rubi that much more a jeep than others? Can't you up grade a sport to do good off roading?
I previously owned a Rubicon and now I have a Sport.
If you are really going to go heavy duty offroading, a Rubicon includes many features that would cost more to upgrade separately. On the other hand, for someone like me, whose idea of offroading is the beach or easy trails, a Rubicon is overkill.

As someone who bought an X (Sport) I would buy a Rubicon if I had to do it all over again. I would rather have all the upgrades into my loan payment. It is a bitch for me saving up for parts. You will want mods. That is a fact. How far do you want to start on the "ladder" of mods. A Rubicon would put me closer to where I want my Jeep to be.
I have a Rubicon. However, a Sport would do the job for 90% of what I do. However, I rather have the extras and not need them than need them and not have them. Sometimes the transfer case, electric lockers, and electric disco make the day a lot easier.
I went through this same thought process and ended up with a stripped down 6-speed 2010 Sport. I spent $100 and bought a set of used rubi rock rails, springs, and shocks and put them on. I spent another $100 and upgraded the radio to a sirius unit from another forum member. I just spent $1700 on new 33" wheels and tires. At this point I'm pretty set. The only thing I miss not having from a stock rubi is the 4.10 gears. My base 3.21 gears are "just ok" with a six speed and 33s. I would recommend that you get the 3.73 gears instead if you go with the sport. I'll probably end up paying someone to do my gears down the road anyways. Even the rubi owners who put larger tires on end up upgrading their gears, so I figured why pay for the 4.10 gears that I would be replacing twice. The D44 axle up front is nice, but I don't think I'll be beating up my ride enough that it will matter.
My rationale was that if I was going to be modding things, then it seemed like everyone who bought a rubi started pulling off a lot of the rubi parts so I figured I would save some money on the front side.

I am going to trade my 09 sport for a 12 Rubicon soon. Similarly equipped, the Rubicon is about $3500 more than a sport. A bare bones base model with no a/c or power windows is not what I want.
I think the Rubicon is a good deal if all you want is a daily driver that is awesome offroad, without the hassle of modyfing anything.
The biggest hassle for me has been trying to find a Rubicon that dosent have auto trans/dual top. The only ones I have seen on lots are pretty loaded up, 33-36k invoice. The one I want is $30,500 invoice. Ill have to special order it.
