rust proofing and undercoating
Ziebart still exists? Around here they are basically a detail shop if not closed. The days of Ziebart are minimal in this area but I'm certain it's due to the minimal rust issues on vehicles Vs. the 70/80's when Ziebart was all the rage...wow ...haven't heard that name in ...well...since the 80's
normal rustproofing is wax-based and generally applied only to sheetmetal panels by spraying inside thru access holes drilled and capped off by the applicators. Undercoating is an asphalt- based spray that coats the wheelhousings and the bottom of the floor pan of the Jeep. The surface rust you see on the axle housings, knuckles and steering gear are not included in a normal rustproofing job, this is surface corrosion and is not normally a concern, other than looks. A black spray bomb does wonders for this stuff...
At $600 the dealer will make more on this rustproofing than he did on the sale of the jeep....

the rustproofing and undercoating is the biggest scam dealers have in their arsenal, and I am still surprised how many people fall for it...
_First of all, before leaving the factory, any brand of cars has gone through a rustproofing and undercoating cycle, so basically you are paying twice for the same thing.
_secondly, no matter what you do, your car will rust! my Jeep is 3 month old, I live in Southern coast of California where it hardly ever rain and never snow, and my underbody is already full of rust... and there is nothing to worry about, this is the nature of steel. No matter the amount of rustproofing you add, it won't change anything...

No the body is not removed. They tape off certain areas and spray what needs to be sprayed. There was some over spray which really pissed me off but a little elbow grease and soapy water removed it. It was just a pain and I am so anal about stuff like that. I have to take it back once a year for "service" if thats what you want to call it.
I got mine rust proofed at the dealer when I bought it....they didn't do a good job. First winter in ontario and so much of the underbody is rusted! Next winter I will get it done at a real shop.
