Default secret license plates

I see this on other forums as well, but what's the reason for erasing or covering license plate numbers in posted photos? What do you do when you are driving around to keep all those people on the road from seeing your plate???
Of course I am being facetious, but I am really curious whether this is just a trend that has caught on from a few paranoid few doing it or if there is a serious reason.

Welcome to the board. You can find a big thread on that here:

Basically, it comes down to paranoia.

If somebody wanted to steal my Jeep; I doubt if they would travel from halfway across the country to do it. It would probably be some asshole in my town.

Thanks for the welcome and the link. With a little patience I've been successful with the search tool so far but I guess I missed that one.
I've got an '07 2dr Rubi. I mostly lurk but I will speak up every now and again.
Thanks again

Knowing what I know about things including the Internet. Generally speaking, the less someone knows about you the better. That could be anyone including DC. Paranoia? Maybe, but sometimes they really are watching.

I have known a few people (mainly women) to get stalked. Thats one reason. Plus, it ain't paranoia when someone is out to get you. Besides, with identy theft at an all time high and getting higher, why risk it. Once the crooks have a certain amount of base info, they can do a lot.

Plus some one with a sense of humor might report your jeep stolen just for shits and giggles!
