Default Shifter size

To those who have taken their shift knob off, what size is the top of the shaft?
I'm thinking of buying a diamond drill bit to make my own rock knobs and want to make sure I'm getting the right diameter.

I think the general concensus is that the shaft isn't threaded but rather the knob is pressed on, correct? I'll be taking this into consideration when planning. I'll eventually do a write-up on it.

not hijacking... couldnt you theoretically get/make and adapter... basically a piece of tubing that is threaded and will press onto the shift lever so that regular knobs can screw down on it? i really want a hurst shifter but dont think they work... jsut wondering what you thought

yes, it is just pressed on... mostly.

It is not threaded. Just pull REALLY hard and you'll see what I'm talking about.

Its got a groove / notch cut in it, and there is a spring on the shift knob that will hold it in place.

Put it in 2nd gear (that way its angled toward you) put both hands on the knob and PULL.

NO, not like that, PULL HARDER.

You'll get it off, but it is tough.


I don't know the diameter of the shift stick though, sorry. I'm gonna measure it later today though.

I just put a baseball on mine last night, and going to drill another one today... I think I used a 9/16 bit... only cause the baseball stretches a bit. (I'll take pics at lunch to show you what I mean, also will shoot pics of the threadless install.

I've thought about cutting out a piece of a bolt to fit in this notch... but I'm not sure many shift knobs will fit because it would be the size of the entire shift stick.

Apparently there is an adapter available... google "Gennie Shifter Lo-Dapt"
I've looked at their site a bunch, and will be ordering after lunch today. Problem is, I don't know if its for auto or manual shifters, so I'll be calling them before I order.

I'm thinking of drilling the hole and then putting something like this into the hole and then jamming onto the shifter. Its vinyl tubing used for applications like an ice maker.



A dab of glue between the tube and rock; maybe one on the shifter (i just don't want to get it stuck).

You could.... but the shift stick is not round at the top... its notched out, so it might not be easy.... also, its fairly large diameter, and I think its larger than most after market shift knobs would be... so you'd have to grind it down to a smaller diameter first, then thread it.

Though, to be honest, I haven't looked too much into that... but I guess it could be done too.

Actual size is 0.580", about 37/64; closest to 9/16 or 0.5625". There are NO threads on the shaft, just a notch and a flat area to accomodate the standard POS knob. The T-case shift lever is the same design, but closer to 7/16 diameter with the same notch and flat area. Both knobs are press on, pop off style - and they are known to rattle.

Replaced them both with something suitable.

Used the grinder on the inside of the T-Handle, and cut off a little of the top of the transfer case shifter rod. For the pistol grip you can use 2 of the inserts (you'll have an extra spare from the T-Handle) to make it fit without play on the rod. Just make sure you cut the rod short enough so it'll go into 2-HI without interference from the dash, if you use that transfer case position.

Secured both with JB Weld and they are solid times two.





Then I put the "Hurst Equipped" emblem on the back.
