you could always plan the route so that you drive down hill the whole way......just go the opposite way your parents went to school....you know ....up hill all the way....while they walked bare foot in the snow!!! 



Driving in the higher gears is OK as long as you are not causing the engine to lug.
That means not demanding power to accelerate, or climb a hill. You will have to shift up and down a lot.
Personally, I think it's better to stay in a gear that allows the engine to turn up a little.
Engine health will more than offset any small fuel savings of being in the higher gears all the time.

6th isn't gonna hurt anything around town. It's pretty inefiicient and if you decide you want to move forward then you'll need to drop to 3rd to get some oomph. At 24mph in 6th I can get 24mpg.
