Shifting to 4 low - question?
I have a 2010 JK unlimited rubicon and I am very happy with it but. I have a question. I watched the video from jeep that explains how to shift to 4 lo and that a little grinding is ok. They said you are supposed to do it while moving. When I try this I can not shift into lo rather transfer case shift will not move until I put the transmission into neutral. I have an automatic btw.. If I put it into neutral then I can go ahead and smoothly move to 4 lo. However I do not need to be moving to do this. Am I doing it wrong?
A related question though I have yet to have a need to engage the lockers - I have tried and all I see on the dash is blinking axle lock lights - shouldn't they just stay in. Yes I am in 4 lo when I try this.
Sorry for the silly questions folks.

You have to be in nuetral and stopped not moving. They say to be moving but I have yet to see one that wont grind when trying this. Also after you engage your lockers you need to drive a little. Try driving forward for a little bit and then backing up. But if you drive forward for a little bit the light should turn solid. If after you drive it for a little bit and it still wont engage then it needs service and you have a problem. Has the gears been changed on this Jeep?

Second, kind of like the lockers, the gears must be lined up to shift into 4 wheel low.
Yes, you need to be in neutral with the automatic, and yes, you should be moving at less than 3 MPH.
To be the smoothest, you should barely be moving...like 1 MPH...
If you're stopped, and the gears are lined up, you good to go...but if they are not, it won't go.
Now moving slowly...like 1 MPH in neutral, it will go in ALL THE TIME.
That is why they say to be moving.

Auto here... Yes, slightest roll goes without grinding. All can be done in the space of my super-short urban driveway. In D (transfer case in 4H) let off the brake a little and immediately put it back in N then shift to 4L while barely moving.
I do it the same way without any grinding at all
