Should I REALLY buy a JK?
I have an '01 Grand Cherokee. I have always loved Jeeps. I was seriously considering purchasing a 4dr JK, but honestly, after reading so many threads here, and on other JK sites, about problems with them, I am really hesitant.
Rusting hinges, bubbling paint, leaking and whistling tops, leaking axles and diffs, blown engines.... it seems to go on and on.
I KNOW that no vehicle is perfect. And people WITH problems tend to post more than people with NO issues. I would just expect a little more from a $30K+ vehicle in 2009.
My GC has served me well. I don't offroad. I am more a fan of it's 4WD capability in bad weather, and the looks and open-road feel that the JK has. It will be my only vehicle and my daily commute vehicle. So I can't really afford to have it out of commission with major mechanical issues, regardless if they are covered by warranty or not.
Help me understand why a JK is still a good vehicle to purchase. I have really fallen in love with the looks of it. I have test-driven one and really like the feel of it. Unfortunately I need to be practical as well.
Is the JK really as bad as I see represented on forums?
Thanks!

Off-roading is definitely something I would like to do at some point in the future.
Are most of the issues directly related to off-roading's effect on the vehicle? I got the impression that people were having major mechanical issues with relatively low mileage and infrequent off-roading. But maybe I'm wrong.
Nothing wrong with being picky, but really, leaking axles and blown engines has little to do with being picky. Even bubbling paint would make the most complacent vehicle owner upset.

I will be honest with you. Off-roading is an expensive hobby.
A JK is more solid than any other vehicules. If you don't wheel, you won't have many issues. (Like any other vehicules)
If you wheel, you will need to do a lot of maintenance (before and after the trail), you will have to buy some mods, and you will have to fix it many times. It's a Jeep thing!

I used to have an 01 GC.. It gave me SO MANY MORE PROBLEMS than the JK has.. I had it for 3 years, hated every mile of it. If I didnt own a Wrangler before the WJ, I would have never bought a JK.
The JK has treated me a lot better than the WJ. the WJ had tranny problems, recall after recall, axle leaks, front windshield leak, seat motor issues, CONSTANTLY burning out front parking light bulbs, front brake rotor warping issues etc etc etc.
The JK is a much better built Jeep than the WJ

Yes, it caused some head aches to me.. but maaaan... My name is Sam, and Im a Jeep addict!
