This is what I did. I've spent quite a few nights in the woods with this setup.

Very nice! That would be great on camping trips for extra sleeping space. Nice job.

I took a moving box designed for hanging clothes. I removed the bar and collapsed the box. I fit almost perfect. Then I just layed a sleeping bag on top and slept like a baby. The box was pretty thick and did not get crushed or anything. It was rock solid.

good luck.

Easiest thing is definitely cut a thin piece of plywood to fit. Mine is constantly in my jeep as I cut it to fit in the rear cargo area when not in use. Takes up literally no room. I also store a military air mattress, 2 bubble pads, and a sleeping bag all under the rear seats where they take up no cabin space.

In this way, I am ready to Jeep sleep anywhere and any time, without any impact on my cargo or passenger areas. Total win if you ask me.

Very nice set-up Ron. That looks like a project I may try down the road.

A lot of great ideas! Thanks all for the input!

I slept in the back of my JKU in Moab once. I just used an air mattress.

We have a new 12 JKU Rubi and plan to do a lot of camping from it. The kids are long gone so for our camping trips we won't need the back seats. I pulled them and put in a platform flush with the back floor. I hinged the platform in a couple of spots so I could use it with the front seats in normal driving position and with extensions to get the max headroom with the seats fully forward. I'm 6'3" and this gives me just enough room to fit comfortably w/the tailgate closed. We planned to try it out this last weekend but there's been too much smoke from forest fires for camping. Maybe next weekend. The seats were kind of a pain to pull but the platform goes in or out w/ 2 bolts.

Very nice work.

How much do you figure the rear seats weigh?

32lbs for the smaller drivers side and 54lbs for the larger seat, by scale but probably +/- a couple of pounds.

Taking them out is quite a weight savings, then.
