Default Steering wheel jerky at 45 mph +

Hey everyone,

After an offroad trip last night I noticed that once we got on the highway to head back into town my steering wheel would jerk moderately (still very controllable) at speeds of 45 mph or higher. It would be jerky for about 10-20 seconds, then be completely normal (with no pull to either side). I went ahead and gave it a wash because I thought maybe there was just mud built up in the wheels/axels but today it has been pulling to either side (experienced both) when I let go of the wheel and let it just roll at low speeds (10 mph) as if it was knocked out of alignment, however at high speeds it is still doing the 20 seconds of jerk, 20 seconds of being smooth, then back to jerking.

Someone said that it sounded like I may have "lost a wheel weight."

Just wondering if some of you might have experience in this that can be shared before heading to the service department tomorrow morning. I figure the more informed I am the better off for me and my jeep.

Thanks.

I had that happen. It wasn't a wheel weight it was mud sitting on the inside of the rim. Same type of issue as a missing wheel weight...

That's probably what it is...I was in some deep mud. I'll give it a more thorough cleaning tomorrow and see if that makes it better.

Thanks

Yep, sounds like a wheel out of balance either because there is mud caked on the inside of the rim or a balance weight fell off while wheeling.
