Stuck
A question just popped into my head as I was surfing youtube. I was watching jeeps winch themselves out of things. If you have a good quality winch with approx 8-9k of pulling power will the winch always pull you out of mud (provided it works and you have something to hook on to). Second I see videos of trucks on being unable to pull stuck vehicles out but a winch has no problems. Why is this I would think a truck would pull harder than a winch but I guess not. If you have been stuck and unable to winch out let me know or post a pic.
The truck has problems because it does not have an anchor point in the ground so it is just as likely to slip as the vehicle being towed is, minus tire differences, etc. The winch wraps around something that is anchored in the ground, thus providing a stable pulling point. No slippage.
You want to get a tree saver to double the strength of your winch and that should help a lot...if you're straight pulling, than sometimes it can be hard..but using pulleys really helps lighten the load. That mud can make it oftley tough...
I had to help a couple 4WD trucks get out of a muddy bog on a recent
Boy Scout campout. I was driving circles all around them, but they were
sunk to the axles. I first hooked up a tow strap and tried yanking one
out. He didn't budge because I was still in the mud and slipping too
much. So, I backed up to the tree line, hooked my tow strap/tree saver
combo around a 6" trunk, and that to the back of my Jeep. I then
hooked him up to my Warn PowerPlant. Had him out in about 4-5
minutes, and the second fellow a few minutes later. No pic's--was too
busy pulling out people that day: Four rescues in all!
P.S.--The first guy come up to me afterward and said, pointing at the
winch, "I've got to get me one of those!" I replied, "What you really
need is a Jeep!"

i have an 8k winch and carry a snatch block with me, and it has been well used. personaly i've been in some DEEP chit, and never needed more then that.
however i wheel with some fullsize guys and i watched a old blazer on 40s get so stuck, the 2 jeeps with winches on him were just being pulled in. they then strapped those 2 jeeps, to 2 more jeeps ... one each ... so now it was 2 winches with 2 jeeps with 8 wheels of traction on each and he still was pulling them some. he did get out.
besides tieing yourself to a tree ... smoke the tires and dig 4 big holes to sit the jeep in, works better then you'd expect.
