Thinking of trading a '10 for a '12
We're investigating trading our '10 Unlimited Sport base model for a '12 Unlimited Sport w/24S, auto, hardtop, locker, connectivity & Sirius, (the last 2 we don't really want but that's all there is out there).
Invoice is $30,059.00. No other discounts are being offered.
Now the big question is what's the used '10 worth. I've looked, and I'm shocked at the value still on what we have now with 28k miles. Somewhere in the neighborhood of $22k. That is unless where I'm looking is completely out of whack on their used trade in values, (KBB).
Anybody got any Jeep negotiating ideas, suggestions?

I traded my 2010 jku sport with about 20k on a 2012 2dr rubi... I got 26k for it, now I did have some mods like lift and tires, and bumpers..... I think you should be able to squease a little more for yours... Try Craigslist for a week or 2...... Jeeps seem to sell fast.
Good luck!

I have been offered around 19-21k for my 2010 with 15k on it. This is a JKU Sport with manual windows and locks. I only paid 21k when it was new
.
I still have not pulled the trigger. Dont know if I can justify 8-10k more for a 2012 JKU just for a motor (I drive only manuals and the new interior is meh). I hate decisions haha

for price - check black book, KBB and NADA. different dealers use different price guides. this will also vary regionally in the country. don't assume you will get full 'clean' value on the trade-in either. in most cases a dealer will quote you a 'rough' or 'average' trade value. the reason is simple, used cars is one of three areas they make most of their money. the lower the trade value, the more they sell and pocket on the resale (whether it's retail or at auction). check a dealers website, they usually have some reference to one of the three price guides on the site. this will let you know ahead of time which price they will quote you on. if they are a KBB dealer, don't try and tell them "well NADA says it's worth $X more". to be honest they won't give a shit. work within the range of the used price guide they use and things will go smoother.
i would also try like someone said to sell it yourself first. if you're able to you will get more money out of it. it also will help when it comes to price for the new one. walking in with say $10K cash for a down payment goes further than $5K cash and a trade in. the $10K is straight forward and the dealer can't 'play with the numbers'. when they are working numbers for a $5K cash & trade in, trust me they are playing with the trade in value behind your back.
the connectivity and Sirius package now are pretty standard 'options' across the board. the industry for years has been doing this as a way to boost the cost and profit on all vehicles. don't sweat it. you will want the connectivity package in the long run, Sirius is a free 1-year subscription.

They just offered 20.5 to 21k for the '10 sight unseen over the phone. It's a super clean vehicle when "clean". The weather here hasn't been co-operating for a good head to tail cleanup. 22k is my minimum I'll take for it on trade after checking all the KBB's, black book & Edmonds etc. We have about 10k equity in it, so there's my down payment.
I'm trying to go through TrueCar.com, but they're telling me since they have to go after this vehicle about 200 miles away, the TrueCar quote isn't applicable. Invoice is the best they'll do. (all this is strictly over the phone, sight unseen, and the '12 is coming from a dealer under the same ownership group) Also one of this dealer's BIG selling points, not to me though, is that they throw in a "free" lifetime warranty.
The last week of the year is supposed to be the best time of the year to buy new. They want the vehicles off the lot, and the hold back money on this year's books.

be careful with Truecar. that is a shitstorm in the dealer world currently. in the past 30 to 60-days since TC started advertising on TV this has just gone viral among the dealers. so far a few states have blocked TC and others are expected to follow suit. has to do with how they are obtaining pricing info from the dealers, which in turn is used against them. the dealers are obviously upset because their gross profit is being exposed to the public.
the dealers are also upset because TC is trying to 'carve out' a space in their world when it comes to sales leads. $299 for new, $399 for used vehicle sales.
many dealers have gone so far now to not accept or honor any TC pricing info. some unscrupulous ones are using it to bring consumers in, but not give the pricing. the OEMs are now starting to get involved with it. it's turning into a huge mess at this point, so i would be wary of using it with them. keep the numbers from TC to yourself at this point is my suggestion.
