Default Tire question

I am considering replacing my stock 255/75/17's with 285/70/17's. Considering Terra Grapplers, Toyo Open Country's, Cooper ST's or BFG A/T's.

Anyway, my question is for those of you who have made a similar jump in size, did you replace the spare at the same time? I was thinking I might just find a used tire of the same size for the spare for now.

If you have the dough, then yes change the spare. It just looks better. Getting a used 285/70/17 is not a bad option as if you get a flat, the off-sized 255 will give you issues.

i got a spare when i went to 285's... it was a pepboys deal with the buy 3 get one free... then i confused the poor guy and was out the doors with 5 of their definity AT's for under $500

i will be going with 315/75/r16's goodyear wrangler duratracs in about 5-8K miles... i will not be getting the spare since i will be paying about 1K as it is for 4.

i have a set of 35" swampers that I will use as a spare if necessary.

Spend the extra for the spare....never now when you could have a flat tire....and it would suck having a smaller donut for a spare like JulianK stated the smaller donut could give you issues if you have to drive some distance to get the flat repaired.

Thanks for the feedback so far. I definitely intend on getting a like sized spare since it could screw expensive bits up if I try to run a smaller size for any length of time.

I just need to decide if I bite the bullet on 5 $200+ tires or do i just go with 4 and a cheapo 5th for now.

I was hoping to make it to spring on my stock Goodyears, but I am at almost 28k miles now and I just don't think they are going to make it that far.

i still vote cheapo 5th for a spare... it will get the job done.

i have played on trails of all difficulties and am yet to destroy a tire. In fact, all the people I ride with are yet to shred a tire and if they did, any like size spare could get us off the trail. If you buy a matching 5th tire... it would be for looks or you plan on doing a 5 tire rotation.

i just got a line on 2 used 315 75 r 16 procomps for 100 bucks out the door including mount and balance. so i have two spares for less than half the cost of 1 new

...if it was me I'd get the matching spare. As long as i could afford an extra $200 or so, i would rather get the complete set right out of the gate then get something non matching and constantly be dissatisfied with the way it looks. Maybe you can get a deal if you buy 5 tires at once.
