Tires rot so never using your spare will give you an unused tire that is slowly being destroyed. If you do need it when the rest of your tires are half worn you will have one tire that doesn't match tread. Each of your other tires will get 20% more life.

Doing a 5-tire rotation also means only having to jack up one corner at a time, making it really easy to do in the driveway.

If you do not do a 5 tire rotation, there may be a risk of having drive line issues with mixing a new tire with a badly warren tire.

5 tire for me. Extra tire life is a great plus and I have the full size spare and the option so waist not want not.

I never even thought about it. Especially a MT. I will start rotating the spare in. Good thread.

I have always rotated all 5 of mine.
My BFG MT's are holding up nicely at about 55% tread and nearly 52k on them.

I'm a 4 tire guy. Leave the spare alone and it goes in the rotation next time I buy tires, which is usually 2 years, so it doesn't dry rot.

This way, I'm only buying 4 tires, not 5.

It probably all balances out equally over time if you really want to sit down and figure it out.

Yes, it does balance out just as well the way you do it.

It is nice to have all the tires the same size when the spare is needed, though.
