Are tire studs removeable/ reuseable?
I'm considering mud tires that are pinned for snow studs. Can I install, then remove the studs at will myself (seasonally)?
My hope is to get M/Ts and use them on icy roads as well as during the summer months.
Does anyone know of a resource for studs, installation tools?
Thanks.

When I bought winter only tires ( Cooper Discoverer M&S) for one of my plow trucks the tire dealer said he could put studs in ONLY when the tire was brand new and that the studs would wear out before the tire did. So I don't think you can reuse them during the winter. From my experience M/T's are great in mud, good in deep snow , fair in light snow and poor on ice. Most northern states only allow studs during the winter months, so if you drive on icy roads a lot you might be well served by a second set of studded tires for the winter. BTW studs are quite loud on dry pavement!
Studs are removable -- it can be done with a pair of pliers, and a bit of grunt.
Once tires have been on the road without studs, the holes that contain the studs begin to fill with crud. This prevents the installation of studs in anything other than new tires.
Google "Nokian Eco Stud" to learn more about studs in tires.
I plan to install a set of quality winter tires with studs on an an extra set of rims, so I can easily swap them over as late in the season as possible, and take them off early in the spring.

Save yourself some grief as you will not be able to replace studs each year they have to be new tires.....but you can remove them after one season. Just bite the bullet like myself and place some studded winter tires on your stock rims to be used only in the winter months.
Then come spring buy some nice classic rims and place some nice mudder's on the your new rims and run these in the Spring/Summer/fall and remove in the winter to save the nice rims from salt and rock chips.
I have done this with my last 5 vehicles and I usually get 5 to 6 winter seasons on my studded winter tires (depends on the amount of travel and dry pavement you drive on). I usually get 3 to 4 seasons on my mudders. I think it's worth the money as to remount & rebalance winters to all-season's 2 times a year takes a toll on your rims and as well a toll on your pocke usually $100 a pop for remount & balance. Each year you are paying off a rim and by year 4 your rims are paid off!
