Default Towing

Any one use one of those dollys that hold the front or rear wheels of a car to tow a car with their JK? I'm sure the mileage will be terrible and it will be a slow ride. Going slow will be OK - i'll be going with my buddy who will be trailering with a diesel pusher motorhome.

I just got addicted to taking my car to the track and I would be interested in towing my car so
1) In case I crack it up or burn up the brakes/clutch, I don't have to drive it home.
2) I plan on putting an on board air system and having a pneumatic impact wrench running off my jeep would be totally cool.
3) It will be great to have a second car at the track to go to Napa at night so I can fix whatever I broke that day.

Is the car 3,500 lbs. or less? If so, you should be ok. I don't know what year your car is, but looks like the 2010 Subaru Legacy GT is 3,477 lbs., which is heavier than previous years. So, you should be ok, depending on if you have been modifying to reduce weight, or if you have inadvertently added weight.

ALSO... you have to take into consideration the weight of the dolly too. If the dolly weighs 600 pounds the car has to weigh under 2900.

2005 Legacy GT now, but I'm planning on getting a shi&*y BMW 3 series - i'm going to strip the inside, put in a cage (which sort of makes it like a jeep) and and beat the piss out of it on the track... I pretty much hate everything that BMW's stand for (minus the roll cage), but the mid 90's 3 series are dirt cheap, and easy to make into sweet track cars.

I don't think I can tow the Subaru without a full trailer due to the all wheel drive.

I'll get the 3 series light enough so I'll be 3500 or below.

I guess what I was asking was has anyone totally disregarded the towing guidelines and how did their JK do? Will it be catastrophic failure if I try to tow 5000 pounds for a few hundred miles? Has anyone tried this?

Wheelin' is awesome and I'll never stop, but driving on the track is cool too. Saying you can only love one is like saying you can only love blonds or brunettes... My love doesn't descriminate.

The JK will be fine unless you need to stop in a hurry - would recommend a surge brake at a minimum with that kind of weight.

The Jeep is rated so low for towing due to the short wheel base and the potential to push the jeep sideways for lack of a better term....hence the reason a 2 door is rated at 2,000 and the 4 door is at 3,500.

I have pulled a 27" boat with mine with no issues but it was a short distance where I wasn't concerned with the need to stop in a hurry.

I hate to have to keep bringing this up, but if you tow beyond the rating of your Jeep, you can be found liable for damages if someone gets hurt. Insurance company lawyers love to go after things like this.
People will say they do it all the time with no problems. That's the catch; they had no problems. Once something goes wrong is when you are screwed.

Another loophole of insurance policies and trailering in some policies is if the trailer or anything on the trailer become detached from the tow vehicle it is no longer covered.

EXAMPLE: If you side swipe a car with the trailer you are fine but if the trailer detaches and hits someone the insurance doesn't get involved.
