Towing your Jeep NEED INPUT
I have a automatic 4 door and I am looking to tow it on a dolly behind my motorhome for my trip out west. I am wondering if I put the transfer case in neutral and dont remove the rear drive shaft, will this mess my transfer case up, or will it be fine. Please give me input. Thanks

You can tow it 4 wheels down with the transfer case in neutral.
Details are in the manual. The same would work for a dolly. I did not go the dolly route because it is just one more thing to worry about and a pain to deal with at campgrounds. |
"Towing your Jeep, Need Input"
What the heck you doin towing my Jeep man!! |
If you tow in on a dolly you will grenade something. The front is a live axle and with the front drive shaft not turning and the rear drive shaft turning something will give, probably the transfer case.
Must be towed 4 down with transfer case in neutral (see manual) or on a trailer with all wheel off of the road. |
i have a 6-speed i put tcase in neu. and trans. in first make sure key is on to unlock the steering in remember never ever back up!

I agree with the others that say to check the manual. The instructions have changed over the past couple of years (some key in, others no key needed). One thing that has not changed is you can not tow on a dolly. It has to be four down or on a trailer.
The Jeep is one of the easiest vehicles to tow. The one deviation from the manual that I do is I do not disconnect the negative battery connection. I pull the IOD fuse in the main fuse panel. It is the one with the white ears/tabs. It pulls up and disconnects almost everything except the power outlets. That allows you to run a supplementary braking device, like a Brake Buddy. |

When you drive in 2 wheel drive the front drive shaft isn't moving, so what would be the difference on a dolly with the transfer case in neutral. I could pull the rear drive shaft off for the tow. Just wanna be sure.
Unless you want to slap on a SpynTec kit, that is. |

Incorrect. The front axles, gears, and driveshaft are always turning, regardless of being in 2wd or 4wd. Going into 4wd simply adds power to the front.

The owners disk on my '11 says not to tow 4wd under any circumstances using a dolly. the Jeep MUST be towed either four down or on a trailer. my JK has 21k on the tires and 11k on the engine, i've only towed it behind my motorhome using a towbar with all 4 down.
