Default Tragedy strikes the JK!

On Tuesday my Jeep recieved a deadly blow. It was involved in an accident on the highway and may be totaled. My girl was driving it, came to a stop in traffic on the highway and apparently the guy behind her was too busy doing other things than driving his vehicle. So his minivan took it upon it's self to drive him directly into the rear of the JK at 55mph throwing it forward and to the oppisite side of the road! THANKFULLY my girl was OK receiving only a minor whiplash. The Jeep on the otherhand hasn't faired so well. I've had it for about 3 months and have loved it! The body shop tells me the frame is bent like a banana and most likely can not be straitened. They seem uncertain weather the insureance adjuster will total it or not. They are saying that they may just order a new frame and replace it. This seems like an unbeliveable amount of work and will leave me with a rental for 3-6 months. My question would be, is it worth it to go through all that work rather than just totaling it out? How can that be any cheaper than totaling it? I would prefer they total it because I really don't want a vehicle that has been wrecked this bad. Additionally, if they do go ahead and repair it, how does that affect the warantee? If anybody has some educated opinions regarding any of this, I would appreciate any input.

For now I will remain Jeepless and can only hope it is totaled so I can get an '08 with the lifetime powertrain warantee..... maybe Detonator yellow

Geezzz, Glad your girl was ok. The Jeep can be replaced, and judging by what you are describing, I would do everything within my ability to make sure they total it and you get to start over with a new one. If it was me, I wouldn't want it repaired if it's that bad, considering it's only 3 months old. Push your insurance company to replace it if it's close enough to totaling out....and make sure that you get any and all mods off of it before insurance gets their hands on it.

Check you state laws before touching it. It may be illegal to do so. In NYS (at least as far as i know from past experiences) once a car gets in a wreck, it belongs to the insurance company until they either return it to you, or sell it.

A friend of mine totaled his Dodge Ram, and went and pulled his stuff out of it, and was turned in for it and had to go to court where he was made to return the parts he took off of it. Dont want to see you get into trouble with that.

Great to hear your girlfriend is ok, but tough to hear about the JK. I looked in the ownwers manual under warranty coverage and it says: "A vehicle has no warranty coverage of any kind if: the vehicle is issued a certificate of title indicating that it is designated as "salvage,:" "junk," "rebuilt," "scrap," or some similar word." Just make sure you have a clean title from your agent and it should be ok as far as warranty coverage. But for me personally, I would push to have it totalled as they never come back the way they started Good luck and keep us informed.

Well, let me rephrase, if allowed by you insurance, get your mods before they pick up the totaled JK. I had a friend that totaled his TJ, and his insurance company allowed him to remove his lift, wheels/tires, etc. He even swapped the transmission out for a buddy that had an auto and wanted a manual. I didn't mean sneak up there in the middle of the night and just take it.

Moral of the story: Do not let other drive your Jeep. It is refered to as "your Jeep" for a reason.

Apparently it was not her fault... I guess if Jeeperson was driving it he would have made it hop into the air to avoide the crash?

I agree here... you need to DEMAND that you will not accept anything but them totalling out the Jeep. You may not have to go into with that attitude just yet... but if they try that BS on you... DO NOT STAND FOR IT! Based on what you have told us... I really expect that they will total it.

Hey Jeeperson, Everyone has opinions. I write estimates for a living and have been for 15 years. If you have any questions regarding your claim and or the process, feel free to send me a pm.
