Default Trip Experience?

Hello, I'm new here.

I am in serious consideration of buying a 2010 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited in Sahara trim with a hardtop. This will be my only vehicle and about 3-4 times a year I drive to SoCal from where I live in AZ, a trip of about 500 miles in 7-8 hours.

Now, I don't expect this vehicle to provide a boulevard cruiser ride and corner like a 'Vette. Firm is cool, bone-jarring is not.

I would very much appreciate exchanging with those who've done trips as concerns that experience and maybe what you've done to improve the trip experince while still retaining the Jeep's legendary off-road capability. Thank you.

i have a 2012 unlimited, and had a 2006 LJ - no bone-jarring rides in these newer jeeps that i'm aware of. i imagine your 2010 unlimited will be the same.

Just make sure you lower the air pressure in the tires. You'll roll along just fine. Gas mileage may suffer a bit but the ride will be nice.

I have gone 450 miles in six hours from NJ to WV in mine and I did notice I felt a little more worn out by the end of the trip. However that was on the highway tires the Jeep came with, I am taking the trip again with the Rubi tires on it this time in a couple of weeks and I can report back how that is if you haven't made up your mind by then. FYI I have a 2 door sport

I used to drive mine down to my work (900 miles) a few times a year. It isn't bad at all. It didn't take me many trips to add cruise control....

Have you considered taking one out on a long test drive so you can get a feel for the ride. That might help.

Default Thank you!!

I very much appreciate the responses so far and hope to receive more.

As he talked of his decision to no longer drive racecars at 80, Paul Newman said, "The synapses don't function rapidly enough anymore". Such is true with mine.
I mistyped the year of my intended purchase - it will be a new 2012 Unlimited Sahara.

With that in mind, any suggestions?

The new JK's are more comfortable than the luxury cars of just a few years ago. The Unlimiteds, with the extra length, make the ride so nice, it is hard to believe it has solid axles...imho!

BUY IT!

I have a '12 Sport Unlimited. I haven't taken further than a 200 mile round trip yet (100 miles at a time) but it rides great. I am still 100% stock as well. Looking at some point to upgrade, but will come when the money does. The stock tires seem to do just fine on the road for a DD, but as for off roading I haven't done it yet.

I have a 12 JKU sport. Taken it on a few 600 mile + trips into the U.P of Michigan. I think it's a great travel vehicle and it's fun having the top off on nice days. My advice, GO GET IT NOW. You'll regret you didn't have one years ago.
