if this happened to me here's what I'd do: As much as I'd like to hit it with heat, I'd be concerned with damaging the plastic of the sill guard (I assume you don't have the stainless ones). So, I'd use a knife to carefully slice the double sticky tape between the sill and the guard. Then I'd use a heat gun to aid removal of the tape from the sill. I'd then try several solvents to see what worked best to release the residue from the sill. Goo Gone, alcohol, paint thinner, etc. I'd avoid especially strong solvents that might damage the plastic of the sill guard (not that it's affected by work on the sill, but because I'm trying to find something that will work once we get to the sill guard). After I figure out what solvent I want to use, I'd test it carefully on a hidden place on the sill guard--to make sure it doesn't soften the plastic or damage the finish. Assuming that checked out good, I'd soak the tape on the sill guard with the solvent and remove it as it loosened up. I'd buy new tape at a local hardware store, and be more careful about placement of the sill guard the second time around. YMMV.
