Brings back memories...
So, the first time my wife saw these on a Jeep, we were camping, and beside us was parked a nicely outfitted Jeep. I'd seen her take a few bewildering looks at them during the day. After we ate, as we were relaxing by the fire she breaks out this little gem, "Oh honey look, thats a great idea!! Those guys made some clotheslines to attach to their truck. Isn't that cool?" 
I tell ya, sometimes it's a good thing she's pretty... lol
