Default When Jerry cans are needed?

Great site & forum! I have my first Jeep on the way, and hope to have it next weekend. I have been spending the last few months researching mods that I may want someday...

I see some of you carry Jerry cans with you on your expeditions. In what cases are these really needed? Only when you are wheeling for a whole weekend and have no access to a gas station? Just curious.

They do look butch though!

Obviously jerry cans are needed when there is no other gas source around.

Yeah, I was guessing that it wouldn't really be needed unless you had a long weekend trip. And I just don't see that happening in the NE.... Those treks in CA look like a blast, though!

I can also see where having storage for water would be really helpful.

Thet may be needed on multi-day trips in remote areas,

or when you want to look extra cool at the mall.

Having the extra gas provides a very welcome peace of mind for those of us that tend to spend all weekend wheeling around remote places. First of all, there usually aren't gas stations along 4wd roads-- so if you want to take a longer trip you need more gas. Here in CA, you can wheel for hundreds of miles without hitting pavement. Being in 4wd, or especially in 4 low and driving on low traction surfaces uses more gas than normal. Also, in the backcountry, it is easier to take a wrong turn and end up adding miles to your trip. Or, you could stumble upon a road that you just want to explore. If you are camping, extra gas means you can run your engine for electricity when needed. When back on pavement, sometimes the nearest gas to a trailhead is several miles away.

So, basically, t's just nice not having to worry about gas!

(and BTW, my 2 cans hold 10 gallons altogether, that's 1/2 a tank.)

This is easy to do where I live. But you wouldn't make it 250 miles on one tank. The Mojave Road is 130 miles and will empty your tank. Low traction uses more gas. But, no worries-- I had the cans.

Default Imagine

Imagine a situation where gas stations within 200 miles of your home are out of gas. Imagine trying to evacuate on any road, local or Interstate and as far as you can see there are vehicles on the shoulder and neutral ground pulled over because they are out of gas. Stark reality is that this has happened . Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. The smart folks who were prepared left days before. Your jeep is more likely to get you into a safer environment than your standard two wheel drive hummer. You don't have hurricane's? What could your situation be? They do look cool though.
