Wilbur needs a checkup already

Well my jk has been a blast to drive the past 2 weeks but i am afraid it needs a few things checked out. Now this is my first jeep and also my first "convertable" but this thing is making an awful lot of noise at 30 MPH Sounds like someone blowing through a large straw. Seams like its near the top of the windshield...i dont know for sure. Also i had a spot of transmission fluid on my driveway today and some fluid dripping off the skid plate under the transmission ( No i havent had any service done yet so cant be a loose plug...) And finally the main reason for taking it in to the shop. It intermittently takes like 5-6 seconds to finally start. Just keeps cranking and cranking and cranking. My aunt claims its only when its humid or rainy but it rained today and started right up every time. I am afraid i might be in for a long wait to get this fixed....i know that if they cant reproduce it they cant/wont fix it  I do not want to install my remote starter untill this is fixed because i am sure they will claim i screwed something up installing it. Guess i will be making an appointment monday Wish me luck!

Wind Noise TSB

I can't help you with your other issues, but I had the following TSB done and it quieted down my rig quite a bit:

http://project-jk.com/jeep-jk-tsb-re...llar-windnoise

Of course it's a wrangler, so it'll never be quiet, but atleast it doesn't sound like I'm diving through a hurricane any more.

James76 09-08-2007 12:13 PM

oh i know it isnt meant to be totally quiet...its just fabric but the sound of rushing air HAS to be fixable! Driving me crazy  I figure since itll be in for the starting issue i will let them fix it...heck thats why i paid for a warranty! :D

The_Captain 09-08-2007 01:44 PM

Tell me about it...

I too have that starter issue, every now and then it will take a few seconds and then start right up. I had it at the dealership for an oil change, they gave me a year of oil changes for free when I bought it, but i forgot to mention the starter. Please let us know what the dealer says. -Captian

Waiting in LA 09-08-2007 02:31 PM

It still amazes me in this day and age that a car company with two years to engineer an automobile can't get things right prior to sale. And these aren't electronic details, but simple mechanical issues that can be tested by almost anyone at any time. The more disaster stories I hear, the more I think I'll visit another manufacturer.

bly109 09-08-2007 05:45 PM

Ours does the starting thing too. Sometimes it wont start, we have to stop cranking and then try again. It always starts up in about a second on the second try. It seems to be totally random too. Im not too worried yet, it always starts and I HATE to take my vehicles in unless I absolutely have to.

James76 09-08-2007 06:05 PM

Yeah i hardly think this is a disaster...it does eventually start up and always on the first try but cmon...its 2007...we cant make cars that start in under 3 seconds? Cmon DCX get with the program! :yup: When i know something you will too.

James76 09-21-2007 05:08 PM

ok, i made an appointment for tuesday night drop. I will let you guys know what they say next week. BTW it did the starting issue 4 times today....finally pissed me off enough to take it in...besides i want my remote starter in ASAP i dont think im getting a hard top this year so im gonna need that extra 20 mins of warm up! :eek2:

James76 09-21-2007 05:40 PM

Well since i install them for a living that is essentially not true, these days at least. Used to be the case the only way to bypass security was to "bury a key" by putting a key in a box under the dash. :yup: This is very rarely used anymore for obvious reasons. In fact we often install starter relays and starter kills to prevent tampering with the system....it is almost impossible to start a vehicle by using remote start wires simply because the systems are so complex and so many things have to happen internally for the engine to fire and the security to accept it as a legal start....its just impossible to do. The units we use, Audiovox, use a brake sense wire that unless the key is in the ignition and turned to on, the unit will shut the engine off if the brake pedal is depressed. Of course a thief can not shift into gear if they do not depress the brake pedal. :naw: So saying that a remote start removes all security is not a very accurate description. ;) Even if they managed to defeat the brake sense wire, the unit automatically shuts down after a maximum of 20 minutes. So they will be driving down the road and it will shut off. :rotflmao1:

James76 09-21-2007 05:53 PM

oh there are also many options, if you wanted to be totally sure they couldnt drive away you could tap into the reverse and drive sense wires and use them as shut downs too....the chances of a thief knowing how to bypass all of these measures is HIGHLY unlikely, plus knowing he would have a maximum travel distance of 20 minutes....makes it a target that is not really worth the risk :naw:

Naw... but if there was a REAL bronco again, I'm sure you'd lose a few jeep fans...

James76 09-25-2007 01:05 PM

Ok dropped Wilbur off for service this afternoon. Said they wouldnt be able to look at it till tomorrow, which i already knew. I had made the reservation online, and they had all the info pulled up and printed out in 5 mins. Said he would call tomorrow afternoon and if it had to stay past that they would provide transportation. I was going to ask about that but i didnt have to! :D He also mentioned that this sounded like a 4 door they had worked on, and had to replace every wiring harness in the tub, as well as the BCM and a few other control modules until they finally got it resolved... :eek2: I was like....thats not what i wanted to hear!!!!!!

VOLJEEPX 09-25-2007 01:17 PM

Keep us informed, James!:yup:

James76 10-22-2007 11:17 AM

 Ok well, the dealer said that they started it 150 times :eek2: Thank you very much for wearing out my starter!!!!!! ) and couldnt replicate the issue. :waiting: So i decided to wait a little while to see if Chrysler would wise up to the situation as the vehicle eventually does start everytime. Not like it leaves me stranded. So they have now released a TSB for this. here http://project-jk.com/images/tsb/TSB_08-023-07.pdf called the dealer today and sceduled the 500 mile oil change, perform this tsb and check for wind noise if it isnt raining again. Manager seemed pleasant and eager to get the issues resolved. :yup: will update after Thursday's trip up there

150 TIMES?!!! They ought to replace the starter just for that reason! Hopefully it wasn't consecutive starts!

James76 10-22-2007 12:26 PM

:eek2: I asked and he said it was a figure of speech....he said they did it at least 20-30 times during a day and a half... I replied why didnt you just put that down then? he just shrugged

VOLJEEPX 10-22-2007 12:30 PM

Well, at least they documented something in case you have a problem down the road with the starter.

James76 10-22-2007 01:02 PM

Starter is included in the powertrain warranty so :bleh: They have to replace it either way

James76 10-24-2007 04:43 PM

:eek2: Well that was worth the trip down to the dealer! Got home late so i had to do the early bird drop off, fill out the form drop the keys in the box etc. It was really cold out so i decided to go in the showroom and sit down. Walked up to the finance counter to borrow a pen and he gives me one and says you can keep that if you buy a viper :D I was like how bout i buy the pen and you give me the viper ;) . Ended up giving me the pen. I moved to the side because some salesmen were dancing around waiting to talk to the guy to get #'s. Filled out my paperwork and said thanks for the pen. Started to walk away and he says hold on a minute. What kinda car are you dropping off? I said an 07 wrangler, just bought it 2 months ago here. Hes like oh ok, whats wrong with it? Told him about the cam sensor and oil change. He turns around reaches into a drawer and pulls out this nice hat and says, you need a Jeep hat to go with that new JK ;) Thanks for stopping by!

Me ---> :eek2:

http://img524.imageshack.us/img524/783/hatwl7.jpg

Either he was just being nice or their customer satisfaction is in the pits and thought he could buy a positive response with a free hat :rotflmao1: Either way i will take it! :yup: I will post the results of the service visit tomorrow hopefully they ordered the new cam sensor monday when i called in.

Robar 10-24-2007 04:46 PM

Nice hat. Don't forget to take the tags off before you wear it.

:duh: I thought that was a jeep thing :rotflmao1: Wearing hats with tags still on them :embarrased: Kidding of course :bleh:

James76 10-25-2007 01:16 PM

:D Ok just got Wilbur back home, and i am pleasently surprised i cant find any damage or anything wrong lol The R/O says

Starting issue
Replace Cam sensor as per TSB 08/023/07 Balance $0.00

Wind noise at winshield
Road tested with service manager unable to duplicate concern as described
( manager went with me when i picked it up to verify, and i couldnt hear it either  )

Warranty oil change as per service contract coupon (which they didnt take a coupon! so i still have 8 left! (2 years worth) :D

And to boot they did another recall which i wasnt aware i fell into
Recall campaign
G40 Reprogram EBC Module
Performed as per recall

I am assuming thats the electronic braking tsb that involves the issue with braking uphill?

Total balance due $0.00

Only complaint i had was the lube tech left a greasy thumb print on the side of the hood which the service manager made him wipe off without me saying a word! :D Based on my visit i am very happy. I will report in a few days if the starting issue is indeed fixed

VOLJEEPX 10-26-2007 08:18 AM

Glad to hear everything worked out for you. We like to rip on the people who don't take care of us, it's good to hear a positive experience!

James76 02-06-2008 01:21 PM

 Wilbur is going back to the dealership monday. For the past few weeks the soft top has progressively been leaking more and more. Couple days ago i opened the door and it felt kinda heavy....realized i had a solid icicle running from the top down into the window and thus filling the door with water. The entire door was a solid chunk of ice. Also had small icicles hanging off the INSIDE door handles  Past 2 days have been steady rain, and the interior is completely saturated. Starting to smell. Luckily i work at a detailing shop so i dont care about that. My concern is the dash tweeters and my remote start which is mounted directly under where the water pools on the dash. :eek2: :drowninga: The water has started to stain the plastic as well.

*edit*

The starting issue i mentioned above has been fixed by the camshaft sensor replacement. I forgot to post about whether it had been fixed

wayland1985 02-06-2008 02:12 PM

Mine was soaked today. Now my ass is wet. I wish I had a minute to bring it in :sigh:

James76 02-11-2008 10:18 AM

:naw: I am absolutely speechless right now...

I made the appointment online last tuesday, and called 10 mins later to verify they received it. So i take the jk up there last night and put the keys in the drop box, with all the appropriate info etc. I call up here a few mins ago and they transfer me around about 5 times.... Finally i get the secretary, and she says...oh Mr Musselwhite, somehow our leak specialist didnt get the appointment notice and hes all booked up this week. Can we get you back next monday? :eek2:

LOL i am not sure if i am more amused by this, or mad...

You have THAT many cars that you have a Leak Specialist, who is busy for an entire week?!:what?:

Unreal...and yes this is the dealer i bought it from. I feel like even tho i hate them, they DID sell it to me, so they SHOULD stand behind it and fix it, but this is un-freaking-believable service from a 5 star dealer.
