The stock headlights suck. I'm surprised that Jeep gets away with selling them like that.
On my "old" JK I replaced them with the Delta Quadbar headlights. It was a direct replacement and made a big difference.
On my "new" JK I replaced them with rallylights.com/detail.aspx?ID=4669"]http://www.rallylights.com/detail.aspx?ID=4669[/URL]. The difference is HUGE and it doesn't cost much more than the Deltas. You have to install a wiring harness for these, but it's pre-made and simple to install. I'm really happy with this setup and have the option for brighter bulbs.
A lot of people are using Cibie headlights from Daniel Stern Lighting with good results. There are a bumch of threads in the electrical section on the subject.

HIDs take a high voltage kick to get going. They take 15-20 seconds to cool down before reignition. Sure, they'll light immediately if you cycle power, but from what I read that dramatically shortens their life.
Now, take your keys out to the Jeep and see how many times they flash when you unlock, come one when you shut the door, or whatever combination your vehicle does without you actually turning on the lights.
HIDs are better as a stand-alone controllable light. Just an opinion of my own.
The light from these is very white. They are halogen, not HID.
