Default Azusa Canyon/Cattleman's Canyon

Today, I got a rare opportunity to cruise around in the San Gabriel OHV Area (Azusa Canyon.) A friend of mine is one of the instructors for my department's off road class. Since I have already had the class and it was my day off, I asked to tag along to check out the area since it has been so long since it has been open.

Kind of strange to see my path in the middle of a reservoir......

This is the furthest I have ever been in the reservoir. If I had gone much further, it would have been likely that I would have sunk into the silt/mud. Note the high water mark in the background (where the rocks turn from light to dark.)

After the various courses in Azusa Canyon, we had a great BBQ lunch. A fine tradition! The last part of the second day is spent on the trail. The trail is one that is closed to the public in "Cattleman's Canyon", in the East Fork of Azusa Canyon. There are a lot of water crossings and plenty of opportunities for custom stripping on your rig.

Dont be hatin' cause I have a cool job! Some of the area's the LASD patrol are in the mountains and 4x4 is needed, so they train the deputies that work in these areas how to wheel. They have 2 classes in the spring and 2 in the fall.

Azusa Canyon has been closed tot he public for a couple of years now. The water level is very low, the lowest I have ever seen it. I did see signs posted in the area about conservation of an endangered species, but I dont know what it could be.

Isn't hypocritical for them to offroad on a closed trail If its sooooo bad for the endangered (swamp rat or whatever) why is it ok for a man with a light bar to go there?

The people that are in the class keep out of the areas that are marked off as a swamp rat habitat. The public I guess, was not respecting the signs and got the place closed.
