Behind The Rocks Trail - Backwards! - EJS 2012
Vince and I got a chance last week to head out with some local Moab wheelers and run the Behind The Rocks Trail. This trail is a 7-rated trail running it in the usual direction, but they wanted to run it backwards, which I'm told is quite a bit harder. The Red Rock 4-Wheelers describe this trail as follows:
"The trail follows the most difficult of the several routes in this region, and gets its renown and its high rating mostly for White Knuckle Hill. Going down the hill is scary enough, but be prepared for a long wait and a good show while some see if they can climb it. It may be the most difficult hill hereabouts that is ascended with any frequency, although the frequency is diminishing as it erodes."
Anyway, Vince and I gave it a shot, but we both winched up White Knuckle Hill, while some of the buggies in our group did it under their own power. I still manged to destroy my rear ring and pinion on this trail, but thankfully we were almost at the end, and Vince was able to strap me out.
