Box Canyon 3-9-08
Last minute we decided to head out to Box Canyon. Having never done the trail before, I was really excited to see what it had to offer. We took a few wrong turns and I think a round about way, but eventually we found Box Canyon.
Along the way we found ourselves on a trail, which I thought was Box Canyon, but a lttle later I discovered it was not. But in this trail we found a waterfall (without water) that at first I was a little weary of going down, but decided to try it. Had the wife get out and spot me. It was great, and I didn't even scrape the bottom, how I'm not sure, but the dirt bike and ATV riders standing at the top were pretty impressed. We stopped for lunch at the bottom and was feeling really good about what I did, then came along a couple TJ's with what looked like 4" lifts, big tires, etc. and I proceeded to watch them go up this hill like it was nothing, then come back down, then back up on a much more difficult line which I had just told my son while eating lunch that a true rock crawler could do that and maybe a heavily modified Jeep. These guys were not that heavily modified, but damn, they did an awesome job. I can't beleive I forgot to grab the camera while they were going.
After this we proceeded to find Box Canyon and there were several obsticals. The first was a massive boulder in the middle of the trail, with no way around it, so had to go over. I dragged the gas tank skid plate on this one and hit the rear diff, but got up it none the less. This rock produced a lot of wincing from my wife, but assured her it was ok. 4lo got a good workout through this section and really taught me what the JK can handle, which is a lot more than my YJ could ever handle. I certainly impressed a lot of other people out there.
Here are some pics of the day out, most obstacles in the box were a there it is and there was too much traffic to stop and take pics, so I didn't get any through there, but will next time.
On the way via US60

Start of the trail, just after airing down

Start of the waterfall.

At one point just before this, I had 1 wheel off the ground, unfortunately my son who was taking hte pics, missed it.

Continuing down. Notice the the dirt bike rider watching me. Of course when they came down, it took them about 3 seconds, not 2 minutes

Just to give a little perspective, here's my son in front of the big gest drop off. It's about 3.5'

The wife and kiddest wipped after a day in the sun and on the trails.

Cool pics and a beautiful day for wheeling yesterday.
When we ran Box Canyon and the Coke Ovens we came out the way you came in going up the waterfall.

Due to recent storms, I can tell you a stock JK Unlimited would probably not make it, 2-door would have a hard time right now too. There are some new boulders from what people were telling me, one of which I nearly high centered on, fortunately I was able to rock enough on the skid plate to get traction. All and all not the most difficult trail for sure, but it's no walk in the park right now. Of course with all the traffic the trail gets it will probably be made easy again fairly soon. I can't wait to try some of the other more dificult trails in the area though.
