JK vs FJ
Pretty surprised at how capable a stock JK rubicon is offroad a few weeks ago I was smoking in the smoking area when a fellow soldier came up to me and started talking about jeeps he had a 2012 jk islander and we were showing each other videos of our Jeeps offroad another soldier came up and was like jeeps suck blah blah he had a 2010 FJ cruiser TRD so we invites him to come with us to ride some trails on the weekend we went to a trail about 25miles from Fort Polk louisiana mostly a lot of mud and deep puddles we had our other buddy come with us in a lifted 2009 GMC sierra on 37s as a recovery vehicle surprised the FJ kept up with us most of the way but he definently got stuck 4 times and had to be pulled out by the GMC I didn't get stuck once but my girlfriend got soaked and the islander got stuck once but he was able to winch himself out turns out FJs aren't as capable as JKs

2010 JK islander* and the guy in the FJ said the only reason he got stuck so much was cause we had mud tires and he didn't he said he would stomp us on a rock crawling trail

I remember Fort Polk . I was station there back in 92-93 with 3/6 inf . You should take him out to peason ridge by hornbeck . There use to be some great mud holes back in there .

I had a 2008 FJ Cruiser Trails Team Edition and it was a great off road vehicle. Aside from the lack of a front locker it was just as capable as most of the Jeeps that I have owned over the years when they were in stock form. It loses out to the Wrangler when you try to throw anything bigger than 33's on it, the IFS then becomes a weak point and the necessary reinforcements needed to go to 35's safely is astounding. For mild to medium wheeling I think an FJ Cruiser with 3" adjustable coil overs and 295's is a great setup that will take you many places.
Prior to the PentaStar the FJ had a better motor, it still rides smoother, holds it's value pretty well (as do most Toyotas), was more reliable, felt more refined in it's fit and finish and it was a better DD.
The Jeeps have the leg up off road thanks to the straight axle up front which is huge when going up in suspension and in tire size. Jeeps are cheaper to mod and with many more aftermarket options. The top and doors come off with ease, they are iconic and American, have better visibility, and chicks tend to dig them. In the end I am back in yet another Jeep (2012 JKU Rubi) so I personally think the Jeep is better option.
For expedition wheeling I like the FJ better and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend one to somebody if their needs better fit the benefits of the FJ.
