Mazourka Canyon & Papoose Flats
sure is a pretty area that's for sure.
Hey way of life, That indeed is a cool area and seeing the pictures brought back lots o memories for me. The San Jose State summer Geology camps ( kind of your senior thesis) were there for 25 years. I went to one of classes in 1975. We lived in tents for 6 weeks on Santa Rita Flats. Used to see wild horses in the valley east of Papoose flats ( I think that was it) There is one of those wilderness fences there ( thanks Clinton, boxer and Cranston) On the saddle at the end of the valley indians used to make arrowheads and watch over the valley in both directions, east looks into Saline valley There is a small road that off shoots from the one to papoose flats that is a little challenging Last time I was on it I was in a fullsize fj 100 landcruiser. and it was fun. the first time I was on it was in a chevy Cheyene stepside pick up and it scared me. The geology is limestone and granite intrusions, dolomite and some metamorphics. There are a few wild cat mines in the area. I even found some gold flakes there once. In the valley where the fence is there are broken arrow heads sometimes. There is even an old cave hidden about 20 or 30 feet up from the valley floor. Yeah seeing Mazouka canyon is way cool. Very Nice trip.
it was nice but it was a really really long day trip.
yeah, you gotta do what you gotta do but, we'll definitely head up there again soon and next time you'll have to join us
we love doing hard trails but our heart has always been in the scenic off-roading. that is the reason why we got into jeeps in the first place. regarding nemo, yes, we reinstalled the 3" coils as the 4" just looked too big for 35" tires. the 3" work great and really is all you need for 35's

Yeah it still does look great with just the 3" coils. That's what I currently run with 34" MTR's (older ones). I've been thinking of going with 35" next time. I'm still thinking that would be a good time to upgrade to the 4" coils and get adjustable upper control arms as well as aftermarket driveshafts. But that's a pretty big step for me doing all that plus the cost of new tires, all at once. You've said in another thread that a dropped pitman arm might be needed for the 4" coils? Do your 35's ever rub the fender flares?

regarding 4" of lift, that was the other reason why i went back down to 3". i don't have a track bar relocation bracket or dropped pitman arm and so my handling wasn't as good as i would have prefered. at 3", it feels good again but if you are going to go up to 4", you really should address this.
with the 3" lift that i have now, no, my 35's do not rub the fenders. they did rub the pinch seam in the rear but i've since hacked the corners off and don't have that problem any more.

This is just a side note but I also worry that with 4" I won't be able to fit the Jeep in the garage. As it is I'm already just a couple inches from scraping the hard top.
Would my Full Traction adjustable track bars be enough or would I need a track bar relocation bracket in addition? I'm also thinking that i'd definately need to replace my front drive shaft with 4" of lift.

yeah, it'll probably be long enough to recenter your axle but, the angle of it at 4" of lift will be significant. you really want to have some kind of track bar and draglink correction with that much lift. without it, your handling won't be as good. replacing your drive shaft isn't such a bad idea either but not necessarily because of the joints. running bigger tires and playing on the kind of trails that i know you do can cause your factory shaft to twist and break.
And yeah the scenic trails are really what got me into offroading. Being able to get further into the backcountry and get away from it all really attracts me. I do love to rock crawl but I don't like having to fix broken parts!
I want my jeep to last for many many offroad/camping trips to come.
