Michigan Trails
If you can track down the latest (Winter 2010) issue of Overland Journal, they have an article on a trip in the UP. If you're unfamiliar with this magazine, it's not crawling in dinky off-road parks, but long, extended trips along sometimes extremely tough trails in magnificent wilderness areas. The same issue also has an article on the Canol Road in Canada--a road that had not been maintained for 60 years. Most of the time they are in LRs, but they use the occasional Toy, motorcycle, and they have a long-term test JK Unlimited (the two doors are not very practical for this type of travel). The magazine is extremely high quality--National Geographic-type paper and photography--so expect to pay a premium if you decide to buy the issue ($10).
The upper Peninsula is where it at. We did a Great Lakes area run to Drummond Island last fall for the fall colors. Spent a weekend on the island, ran a bunch of trails, camped, drank lots at night, and had a blast. We're going to turn it into an annual run.
Hey, if anyone else has some really good ideas or experiences in the U.P. please share where you went and what you did...
I found a really sweet campsite along the lake in Mackinac County called the Big Knob State Forest Campground (real remote) way off the beaten path.

Here's link to the thread about the Drummond Island trip. There should be some good pics and video in there.
