Thumbs up MOAB DAY 3: Project-JK EJS 2010 - Metal Masher Trail

For day 3, we hooked up with the guys from MBRP and headed out to Metal Masher. Now, this is a trail that has stopped us in our tracks two years in a row due to breakage and so this year, we headed up again with the intent of finishing it up. Here are some pics from our day out...

Even though it was super windy and a cooling off fast with a winter storm coming in, we decided to keep our tops off but thought it might be a good idea to at least get our doors back on just in case....

Meeting up with the MBRP guys in town before heading out to the trail...

At the staging area airing down and picking up a couple more people to join our group....

The Metal Masher Trailhead....

Making our way over to the first ledge....

Piginajeep discovers he's lost an upper control arm nut and so we take some time out to address it before continuing on....

On the move again, Trail Bud is the first to take on the first ledge. Being that he's the one who blew out his rear ring gear last year, he didn't take any chances and made his way up on the right side of the tree....

JeepCacher had to work the ledge a bit but eventually got up without any problems....

davidjcastaldo met us at the staging area and this was his first time wheeling his JK in Moab....

gonegoannas clearing the ledge with ease....

With a HEMI, an Atlas and 40" Toyo's, Brainchild takes on the hard side of the ledge and walks up it with ease....

Two years ago, I broke a driveshaft attempting this same ledge. Last year, WOLette called it quits after several valient attemps without any lockers but this year, she was able to rock it with ease....

Making our way across the sandstone trail...

Ledge 2 is tall and very vertical. Here's TikiJK standing next to it to give it some scale...

WOLette posing for a shot on her way up...

Getting up the ledge requires a nice little "Moab bump" and here you can see sm_rubi executing it flawlessly...

MBRP bumps their 4-Door up with ease as well....

Taking a quick stop for some lunch....

Moving along, Trail Bud hammering his way up the 3rd steep ledge...

Piginajeep getting seriously vertical and giving it his all in his 2-door....

gonegoannas walking right up with ease....

mituk clearing the top of the ledge....

mkjeep jammin it in his 4-door X....

WOLette and I planning a route up Rock Chucker before taking it on....

Here she goes up...

and over....

Trail Bud making several attempts without a rear locker before calling it quits....

Rock Chucker was a cakewalk for Brainchild....

Climbing our way up Mirror Gulch...

WOLette climbing out the hard side of the gulch...

Piginajeep getting a bit tippy as he climbs his way out...

JeepCacher getting a little air time on his way up....

Brainchild climbing out the hard side too....

On top of the world....

As we head for pavement, davidjcastaldo discovers that one of his aftermarket TPMS valve stems have come loose and results in a flat. After installing his spare, we later find that it too has come loose due to a missing nut and now he has 2 flats....

After getting a call on the CB about what's going on, WOLette and I turn around and head back to davidjcastaldo, gonegonnas and mituk who had stayed behind with him. Fortunately, I brought along spare valve stems and so we went to work. Here we are breaking the bead hillbilly style...

Installing new valve stem with my handy dandy Off Road Evolution valve stem tool....

5 minutes later, we started airing the tire back up, reinstalled it on the Jeep and we were back on our way to pavement....

A parting shot of the Merrimack and Monitor as the sun was starting to set....

Incredible. For those of us not able to crawl like you guys...what features of the jeep do you turn on/off in order to make it up rock walls like that? It's amazing. Thanks for taking time out to teach those of us who aren't able to learn from direct experience.

I believe i saw a silver 4 door with what looked like 2.5 inch lift with 33s?..or 35? go up the right side of that tree?...pretty cool stuff...

In addition to lockers...a good spotter is the next thing you need

They use a sony for most of them. It does do real well..I like my Canon better, but the quality of the Sony always seems to hold up well.

That was Moochie, a Rubicon with 35's and a 3" Teraflex lift
