Project-JK Mojave Desert Crucero Exploration Run 01/03/09
When I first posted this run on the forum late last Thursday night, I figured that we might see one or two last minute type people who would sign up for it. Of course, when it became clear that we would have as many as 27 confirmed Jeeps coming along for the ride, I was completely blown away. Anyway, if you were one of few in the SoCal area who weren't able to join us on this last minute scenic run out to the Mojave Desert, here are a few pics from our trip....
(NOTE: to see more pics from our run, click on the photos below and you will be redirected to more shots of that specific time frame and area)
Meeting up at the original Del Taco in Barstow....
Our one and only toad doing an outstanding job of going around to greet everyone and hand out name tags to everyone...
Taking some time to get acquainted with all the new faces....
Thanks to the generosity of tree service crew across the street, we were able to get these cool arial shots of our group....
A couple of shots of our group lining up along the Historic Route 66....
Here's a shot of us airing down at the trailhead...
In order to get this shot of all our Jeeps in the frame, a good amount of hiking was required....
Off Topic helping me deposit some trash at the drivers meeting...
Here we are at our first stop, the crash site of an F-4 Phantom that apparently went down on New Years Day 1964....
Thanks to all the recent rains, the entrance to Brodwell Dry Lake was anything but....
With the rest of our group in line, we're ready to make our way across the lake bed....
Here are a few muddin shots ranging from mild to wild....
With our mud play out of the way, we are ready to cross the lake bed....
Driving across Broadwell Dry Lake....
Making a quick potty stop on our way to Sands and the plank road. Notice the cool potty shelter that toad brough along for all the ladies....
Some shots at our 2nd stop for the day and lunch spot, the old ghost community of Sands....
Our 3rd stop of the day took us over to an old plank road north of Sands....
Making our way back to Crucero, we encountered a stretch of road that a sand dune had reclaimed. After scoping the route out, we determined that it was just a little too steep, too soft and too off camber to try and get all 27 Jeeps up on the ridge safely especially with nighfall coming. Here are a few shots of me going up the dune to check things out as well as views from the top....
Our final stop of the day was the famous Mojave Desert Megaphone....
Finally, a couple night time shots of our exit through Afton Canyon which as some of you may know, includes a very deep water crossing at the end....

Again, I'd like to take everyone for coming out and joining us on this last minute run and for making it so much fun! I'd also like to give special thanks to Off Topic for taking up the rear and helping me to keep our group together and Toad for being the ultimate ambassador for Project-JK.com. Your efforts in greeting everyone, making them feel welcome and handing out name tags was
a tremendous help to us.
Looking forward to seeing you all on our next run
