Thumbs up Project-JK Old Mojave Road 2008 - Part 2 (Afton Canyon/Soda Dry Lake)

Hooray - we finally did it, we finally finished up the last leg of the Old Mojave Road.... albeit, we did it in reverse. That is, we did starting up from about Afton Canyon and ended up on the other side of Soda Dry Lake - where we ended our trip the last time around. Unfortunately, the only people from our original group that was able to join us we toad, bullfrog, OffTopic, Bill, Trail Bud, WOLette and I. But, we were fortunate enough to be joined by a couple of newbies to JK-Forum, Dawson and artpics. Anyway, here are some of the pics that we took along the way - I hope you enjoy them (BTW - if you want to see more pics that were taken at the same time as the one you are viewing, simply click on the pic to see them) ....

Kendra, Dawson and Bill hanging out in the parking lot at Coco's...

Airing down over by the Afton Canyon Campground...

OffTopic splashing her way through the deepest section of the Mojave River...

View of Afton Canyon looking east...

a quick stop over at some Slot Caves near the Arbuckle Mine...

a little six legged friend posing for a shot in a beautiful fuchsia catus flower...

Ryan and bullfrog save the day by holding up a bridge as a speeding train speeds overhead...

Bill and Andrew watch from above as Trail Bud climbs to the top of the dry fall inside Spooky Canyon...

Shot of Trail Bud from above...

View from atop the falls looking down at toad and bullfrog...

Looking up one of the many fisures leading up to the surface...

Shots of the old railroad bridge at the end of Afton Canyon...

At the edge of Soda Dry Lake...

Everybody out looking for a rock before we make our crossing...

us drving out to the center of Soda Dry Lake...

toad at the Soda Dry Lake rock pile showing off her rock...

everyone climbing around the rock pile after making their deposit...

one of the more interesting rocks that we found...

Miscellaneous shots around the rock pile and across Soda Dry Lake...

Mining cabins that we stopped at along the way...

Some wardrobe left behind in the closet...

his and hers toilets...

the kitchen had seen better days...

View into the mineshaft near the cabins...

Looking up a tall vertical shaft with wooden ladders deep inside the mine...

From deep inside looking out....

View of the cabins from a top the mountain...

Yellow Primrose at the Kelso Dunes at sunset, our last stop for the day...

The desert floor was carpeted with flowers...

There were a few San Verbena still blooming there as well...

Once again, thanks to all that joined us on this trip especially Dawson, Kendra and artpics as this was your first run with us. Certainly, I do hope it isn't the last one you do with us as we really enjoyed having you along.

Awesome pics! Looks like a fun and scenic trip. Exploring things while 4wheeling is always a blast. There are some old civil war forts(3 to be exact) back where we ride our atv's, no on really knows about them. It takes 5 miles of atv'ing through brush to get to them.

Honestly, exploring is what got us into wheeling in the first place. The forts you mentioned would be an awesome find
