Sheeps Crossing, AZ
My wife, kids, dog, and I took a ride out to Sheeps Crossing last Sunday. It was cold (for Arizona) and it rained on us the whole way, AND WE LOVED EVERY SECOND! Going in wasn't bad. After dark the roads had really softened up, and there were a couple patches of clay that really packed up the tires. On some of the down hills it was interesting trying to keep the rear end behind us. And the fog really added to the evening.

Nice! I still haven't been all the way to Sheeps Crossing. I have been on a side trail just before that called Red Creek. It takes you down a wash with some fairly large boulders to the Verde River where there is a nice place to camp. It is very green the entire way despite being in the desert. It was here that we witnessed a flash flood in Sept 08. It was a good thing we were already at the campsite or else we would have all washed away down the Verde!!

In the exact same spot moments later as the floodwaters race down Red Creek and into the Verde River

We were playing horse shoe in this spot literally minutes before

Looking downstream as the flood turns the Verde brown

From higher up looking back at the way we came in now covered in raging muddy flood waters

The flood completely cutoff our way in and we were sort of trapped on an island. There was no cell coverage in this area and we had no idea how long we'd be stuck here for. One of the guys with us had a Ham radio and was able to get word out that we were ok and would be stuck here for awhile. (This incident is what prompted me to get my ham license and buy a ham radio for my jeep). Luckily the waters subsided that evening and we were able to head out the next day. The trail was much different heading back as the flood rearranged it a little. There was a lot of deep standing water which made getting out a little difficult but fun.

Dave in the red TJ is stuck in the water and had to winch himself out:

Amazingly my JK Rubi made it through the same spot no problem. Keep in mind it was all stock and this was the first real adventure we had taken it on. I never knew wheeling could be so much fun!!

You gotta love flash floods in the desert, as long as you're on high ground, and sometimes thats not even enough.
Scottg07 seeing your Dad's Jeep Nose under water gives me the chills. Hopefully he wasn't sucking water? Could make for a real long weekend.
There is a header placque on the east end of the bridge that describes how the ranchers built the bridge to safely get the heards across the river. The only tracks I saw on the bridge were dirt bikes.

Cool pics! Is that a walking bridge in the 3rd pic? Is that where the sheep cross?
