A friendly suggestion on how to use internet forums: Ask your question in the subject line. Most of us do not read every post, but we scan the subjects to see if there is something with which we can help. Had your subject been, "Anyone Using External GPS w/iPad Mini?", I would have skipped over this and saved a bit of time. And someone who uses Apple products would have seen it, and very likely jumped in to answer your question. Which makes forums more efficient for both you and me.

Oh, and should there be anything you'd like to know about using Android tablets for GPS trail nav, I'm full of answers on that topic.

I've used my iPhone's hotspot as wifi to power the iPad's nav before. Usually used in conjunction with Maplets and when I want a larger screen.

I have a Bluetooth GPS from using with an old PDA that I tried on my iPad to compare with the internal GPS. Works pretty good, but no more accurate than the internal one and using Bluetooth and streaming data from the GPS was deadly on the iPad's battery.
