Chapter 18 - Frosted Dunes
Among the more amazing qualities of Colorado are the stark contrasts of the landscapes. Flat plains abruptly end at towering 14,000 ft mountain ranges. Evergreen forests suddenly dissappear into alpine tundra. Trickling streams in the fall and winter suddenly become torrental rivers with the spring snow melts. Mountain sides switch from shades of green and grey to brilliant golden canvases in the fall with the changing Aspens.
One of my favorite contrasts which Lo2aY reminded me of with his post Medano Pass - Blizzard Run is the fact that the sand dunes in our state become covered with snow. A contrast of a seemingly warm dry climate with a cold alpine one.

Here are some shots from an adventure I had with friends shortly after a winter blizzard a few years back. You will notice the winds blowing the snow at the tops of the peaks in these photos. Something I like to capture as it shows how brutal the weather can be at the top of a 14,000 ft peak in a Colorado Winter.
Enjoy!
