Default Tybee Island camping???? NOT!!!!

So my wife is on summer break from college and I'm on leave for two weeks (army). The children are visiting family for the summer and I have a brand new 2010 jk. Due to the jeep purchase, vacation this year wasn't going to allow us to stay in hotels and visit theme parks. Originally we were gonna just relax at home with no children (which is awesome) but boredom struck at about day 5. It's been 95 degrees for who knows how long and we wanna find water. So we decide to pack up and go camping!!! closest beach to us is Savannah GA. or Destin FL. we were in destin in April and wifey has never seen savannah so we pack up and head out. It was the first long trip in the new jeep and had no problems other than the lack of power on a few up hills and no real arm resting areas. But hey, it's a jeep. If I wanted comfort Id buy a caddilac. After 4 hours of traveling we get to the tybee island campsite, check in (paid $30 for the site) and we get escorted to our site. IT WAS A GRASSY PARKING LOT WITH GRAND VIEW OF A WATER TOWER AND WATER TREATMENT FACITILITY!!! The sites were right next to each other. We had 6 families withing 60 feet of us. I would have packed it all up and left if there was another campground anywhere near us but it's all that was available. The good news is it was 2 blocks from the beach and the water was amazing!!! And it did suck trying to sleep in 80 degree weather!!! But we did make it to the beach!!! hope you all are enjoying your summer!!!!!

Thumbs up Tybee

Sorry to hear you had such a bad location. Been there, nice beach. We use to live in Muscogee county several years back. Try north of you in Harris county for a great weekend getaway. Great trails and sites for the kids. State Park there is awsome. Don't forget the backwater area on the Alabama side of the Chatahoochee. Also next time south, try to make the trip try Jekyll Island. State owned and nice cool camp sites. Lots to do for the kids also and if you are into golf, 4 golf courses. fishing, site seeing. Nice beach also. Good luck at Fort Benning. Played alot of golf there.

I hear ya. I live in Savannah. The real trick is not to camp in the Low Country this time of year! It's pretty fun out on Little Tybee Island, though. The only way to get there is by renting kayaks or a boat. It's all uninhabited wetlands and subtropical forest. Sounds great, right? Wrong. We went out there last year with some friends in June... paddled down the river... dragged the kayaks onto the beach and set up camp. Got the fire going and had dinner and some beers. Not bad, not bad. Wow, it's still pretty warm we thought (10pm @ 96F)...
then the sea breeze stopped. O M G.
The sand gnats found us.
We retreated to the tents for some relief... 11pm 95F, no breeze. No more gnats... OW, WTF was that.
Little bastard bugs called "No see 'ems" can pass through tent screens... miserable.
Hot as Ballsoup, getting eaten by bugs.
4am 94F
Moon rises.... breeze returns. Beach walk, break down camp and load the boats... paddle back across the sound. Load the truck... Sonic for breakfast.
I'll stick to camping in the mountains, thanks.

Sorry for the no-good camp site.

Here's something cool, just south of Columbus, near Lumpkin...Providence Canyon.

There's no beach, but it's a cool day trip, or you can camp.

AMEN! Ive lived in both coastal and Mountainous areas. Coastal areas = hot day or night. I did most all of my boy scouting years in Colorado. I liked how the days would be warm and dry and nights would cool waaaaaay off. Made sleeping in your sleeping bag nice and cozy. (sure beats sleeping on top of it in the heat and hoping the nylon shell keeps you "cool" har har.

That sucks. I love Savannah, my wife is from there so we get to visit quite often. Summers can be rough though, especially if you are sleeping outside. Hope the trip ended up being good.
