I believe you are to keep is connected to assist in the crossing, sort of like a frontal propeller.

I don't know of anyone that disconnects it. It will still get wet, running or not.

if you're gonna go deep, forget the fan, make sure you've got a snorkel...

some people disconnect their fan when doing water crossing bc the fan can toss water all over the place, like on your air intake. but not sure about the jk

Great question. Surely snapping the fan blades would be the first concern.... like to hear from someone that fords through water higher than the wheels.

Our off-road group, as a matter of routine, LOOKS for deep water to cross and venture into. 90% of the group do have snorkels of course. There certainly have been instances of fan motors to stop working after sometime. But, there have also been a fair amount if forum members, who have had to replace the fan motors that don't routinely cross water. One member had to replace 5 fan motors already. The fans are not housed in water resistant casings and do get wet.

Do a search of the forum for fan related incidents and you will find those threads. I have not heard of and fans parts physically breaking off the fan wheel myself. The search will also help you find aftermarket fan motors that are sealed and much more resistant to water related problems.

Another problem with frequent water crossing in the JK is the pulleys that are on the accessories belt such as the idler and tensioner pulleys getting a loud whiny sound that increases with the acceleration. The JK fan is electric and not connected to the accessories belt. Hope this information helps some.

Went out this weekend and played in some very deep ass mud holes and my fan was clogged with mud and stopped working, my radiator was clogged with mud and I spent an hour getting the mud out of the radiator fins and had to take the fan apart and clean it out. I washed the motor, fan blades and shroud with hot water and then let it dry for about 4 hours in the sun. It works as normal now. But I was worried that I was going to need a new fan motor... I should buy one just to carry with me

Some do, some don't but we did have one fella on a run with us this weekend who shredded his fan during a water crossing, so the claims to disconnect it are valid, but just remember to reconnect once you are through. You can overheat pretty darn quickly without it, especially at trail speeds.
