Default Budget Roof Rack

Guess I should have put this here instead.

Call me cheap or what you may, but I just could not see spending $1000+ on a roof rack sysyem. So.... I took and made my own. Give you your opinions on what you think. Here is the cost and materials it took me to get the extra storage that I need for the four of us to go on trips together.

1) 3/4" x 53 1/4" steel pipe (2 ea) - $24.96 @ Home Depot

2) 3/4" End Caps (4 ea) - $6.40 @ Home Depot

2) Insulation Padding 6' (cut to 52") (2 ea) - $2.76 @ Home Depot

3) 5/16" x 3" Clothesline J-Bolts (4 ea) - $6.12 @ Home Depot

4) 5/16" Flatwashers (4 ea) - $0.36 @ Home Depot

5) Kit Kat Bar (1 ea) - $0.99 @ Home Depot (used to keep 10 yr old Daughter Happy)

6) Bell Car Carrier Bag Size 12 - $19.99 @ Kmart

Total $61.58

Total Time taken to install and go to stores 1.5 hrs

Step 1 - Install padding on steel pipe and cap off both ends.

Step 2 - Bolt pipe to top of roll bar using existing holes for door shrouds.

Step 3 - Put Bikini Top Back on.

Step 4 - Strap Bag down.

Step 5 - Go enjoy spending time with family......

I've done the same thing with a wooden plank and some rope... simple but effective when the jeep is absolutely packed.
