I would never. To be honest the reason why I purchased a fire extinguisher was because I passed a burning truck on my way to work and felt helpless.

There is a point where a 2lb extinguisher is useless. I had my Jeep catch fire and I was close enough to a 25lb extiguisher and used a good 1/4 of it. Saved the Jeep with only $800 worth of damage that *had* had to be replaced.

I would be very careful on how to tie the fire extinguisher to the Jeep. You do not want it becoming a projectile that can kill someone in case you have an accident, such as a head-on collision. Try to use those U-bolts to clamp it properly to the frame. home Depot and Lowe's have them.

I have a Halon marine extinguisher on mine. No mess in case of a fire. Most of those chemical types leave a crust/sediment that will force to replace stuff damaged by it, even though is saves your Jeep from being burned. Halon is also a lot more efficient than the other types.

Where do you keep your extiguisher? I'd be concerned with halon inside the passenger area. I've seen what that stuff does to skin first hand (literally). I imagine it'd be fine really well secured and out of the way. Halon just makes me jumpy now.

I keep it bolted to the roll bar using U-bolts and it's own secure bracket.

What does it do to skin? The problem I read about is it takes the oxygen out of enclosed environments hence being so effective against fire. (besides the ozone layer degradation) Is it still used in the military for fires in armored vehicles?

The chemical types tend to leave a crust that in many cases forces the replacement of plastic, rubber and other stuff even if not damaged by the fire.

On a side note. A few years ago I put down a fire in my Camry's engine using mud. It was raining cats and dogs and I suddenly saw a smoke coming from the engine compartment. Opened it and saw the fire. No extinguisher but lots of mud on the side of the road. Threw several handful over the fire and put it down. Towed car to shop where the mechanic showed me that some animal made a nest on top of the engine and it caught fire. Replaced a few wires, washed engine and it was new. :-)

Remember, if you can't easily remove it from its holder then it's basically useless. I've seen guys with them mounted to the roll bars with pipe clamps and other things..... They are not for looks. A short river strap is a better idea than a pipe clamp or zip tie.

I keep my extinguisher in the same rear roll bar spot as y'all. But i keep mine attached using 4 zip ties. I use 2 zipties at top, and 2 at bottom. In my last emergency fire situation I just twisted the canister, breaking the zip ties quite easily, and started putting out the fire.

It stayed in that spot for several months and never fell off with all my driving.

Good idea!

Mine is a dry chemical extinguisher that came with a metal mounting bracket that fits into grooves around the next of the bottle. It's mounted to my roll bar and basically has no movement/way for it to come off unless you pull it straght out of the mount. I use to bungee straps for extra security...although one would be enough, I am being over cautious. Easy to release if it's needed...solidly mounted otherwise. All this for $9.95...I got lucky...there is an overstock wharehouse just down the road from where I live (no, the extinguisher is not old/out of charge, etc.).
